Perhaps the most often ignored piece of resume advice is the recommendation that you keep your resume up to date. I understand it, and am guilty of it myself. You get a new position, its going great, so the last thing on your mind is adding your new job and achievements to your old resume.
Unfortunately, years (or months) down the road, you will end up needing that resume again. And when you go back to update it, you may find that you cannot remember the exact numbers, details, or dates of specific achievements. Not keeping your resume up-to-date can rob you of accuracy and, ultimately, result in a less-effective resume.
These problems are compounded when the new job seeking situation is unexpected. Perhaps you just stopped by TopBuildingJobs.com out of boredom, or are looking for a friend, or have a friend contact you about an opening.
